How to Shop Local…Online!

As many small, locally-owned businesses are facing closures and limited foot traffic, it’s more important than ever to support local businesses.

Many locally-owned shops are offering free local delivery, selling gift cards for future purchases, and finding other creative ways to continue to serve their customers…but they can only do so if shoppers find creative ways to shop!

Here are just a handful of some ways you can use the web and #keepsocialmediasocial to support local businesses to order things you’d shop for anyway:

1. Google!

It sounds so simple, but a quick Google search for “local [type of store]” can help you find some great new spots. Looking for craft supplies? Instead of ordering online from a big box store, do a Google search for “[city] area craft store.” Need to order the next book on your quarantine reading list? Call up your local book shop. Most retail stores are still offering some sort of online ordering or curbside pickup, so you can shop safely!

2. Use hashtags on Instagram

Looking for a local florist to brighten up your home? Search the hashtag #denverflorist and see what you find. Search #denverjeweler to find some new bling to liven up your quarantine style.

Be sure to select “recent” results to find businesses or individuals who are currently active!

Once you find the business you want to patronize, you might be able to shop directly through their Instagram account by viewing their tagged products or communicating with the business via DM. If not, simply go to their website!

3. Eat & Drink Local

If you’re looking to re-stock your liquor cabinet, avoid the liquor store and instead, hit up your favorite local breweries and distilleries. Many are still slinging bottles and 6-packs to-go in lieu of in-person service, and as small local businesses, every purchase will make all the difference! Alternatively, or additionally, consider purchasing a gift card for future use at your favorite bars or restaurants — they could use the financial boost now, and you’ll have an exciting evening out to look forward to once everything opens back up.

4. Keep social media social, and support small and local businesses, even if you can’t afford to shop right now.

We know, times are tough for a lot of people. If you can’t support a local business by purchasing from them, here are some other ways you can still help them out:

  • Follow them and engage with them on social media
  • Post relevant content to your social media accounts tagging them and/or using their branded hashtags (for example, you could post a throwback photo to your last time eating at your favorite local restaurant)
  • Write and share a positive review, from past experiences you’ve had with them
  • Encourage your friends and family to shop local when they can
  • When you see a great sale while scrolling through your social media, screenshot it and share it with your friends. Think of it as virtual coupon clipping – you’re providing your friends with something valuable
